4 Common Addictions We Ignore

Whenever we hear the word ‘addiction,’ we often think about celebrities—and even people that we know—that got hooked on drugs, alcohol, gambling or some other form of illegal substance. There is no doubt that these are serious problems. However, there is a host of other types of addictions that society fails to see as problematic. In fact, in many cases, these addictions seem to be accepted these days as just a natural part of our daily lives.

Here are some of the common addictions that we’ve learned to turn a blind eye to:

 Phone addiction

Smartphones now give us the ability to do more than just making and sending text messages. As such, it seems to be an almost accepted norm that people are literally glued to their phones. Of course, we all want to make sure that people can reach us, especially during an emergency. But if you start finding yourself acting up when you can’t get a decent signal or would rather tinker with your phone than chat with the person opposite you at the dinner table, then this is something more than just wanting to stay in touch.

Social media addiction

Another common addiction that a lot of us tend to ignore is the addiction to social media. This could either be with one particular social media account or a plethora of social media sites. Social media is an excellent tool to help you stay in touch and even promote your business. However, if it’s eating up your time until you end up compromising other responsibilities such as your family, then this could be a sign that you are addicted.

Work addiction


In our society, we tend to admire people who consider themselves workaholics. After all, they are the ones who are really successful, right? Well, not necessarily.

More often than not, people who are addicted to their work are those that are looking for something to help them escape other responsibilities and challenges. It’s so easy to brush something aside by simply saying that you’re busy. Unfortunately, workaholics tend to do this even to those they claim to matter the most.

Exercise addiction

Have you ever met anyone who is practically in the gym from opening to closing and still continues to work out at home? Well, guess what? You’ve just met someone who is addicted to the emotional rush they get from exercising.

One of the benefits of exercising is that the body releases endorphins, otherwise known as the ‘happy hormone.’ As with everything else, the feeling that endorphins give you only lasts for so long before it starts waning. People who are addicted to exercising don’t want to let go of that feeling. Therefore, they keep going on to get their fix. Exercise is good for you; that’s true. However, having too much of a good thing can also be dangerous.
